crows_roost: St Chris DogHead (St Chris DogHead)
There was a voicemail from Shelby last Thursday night that went something like this, "Hi there *mewmewmew* I found something in the woodpile *mewMewMEWMEWmewmew* Please call me when you can".

One little tabby tom was in hand when I arrived home. As twilight deepened there was another frantic mewling still deep in the shoulder high woodpile. At that point we had to guess mom-cat was not coming back for whatever reason and start the dig; by flashlight sometime latter the second kitten was found.

The first night we lacked any KMR (Kitten Replacement Milk) so I mixed warm water into some of the canned adult cat food we have. Our Guido cat didn't take to kindly to that. He rushed over when he heard the can being opened and watched with increasingly hostile disbelief as we feed HIS food to that tiny, demanding, nothing but fluff and noise kitten! "HEY - Whatta yah doin' you stupid Ape - that is the Guid's food. Hey, I'm talkin' to you!". This was followed by Guido hissing and swatting at anything breathing his air for a few hours, four-legged or two-legged.

The shelter I had hoped to foster for doesn't take in un-weaned kittens, the rescue I was sent along to is rather far afield and hasn't followed up on my telephone call, so I guess they are ours to try and raise and rehome.

The kindly vet that saw us, with out an appointment at just before five the following day, gave us good advice, a large back of free KMR, and a generous discount on our bill.

They lost a bit of weight while they were insisting "NOT THE MAMA" as we tried to feed, bathe, and care for them the first day or so but are doing better now. We're guessing them at nearing two weeks old.

The larger of the two is walking on unsteady legs and starting to groom himself!
They are still so young and fragile I honestly can't guess is they'll make it or now but they'll have my all. Most folks who have seen them are utterly taken by their cuteness (they are kittens after all). When they ask when they'll be ready for adoption or if I'm keeping them I have to gently tell them that the kittens survival is still touch and go for another couple of weeks. No matter how hard I try, I'm not the mama...
